Order: Acting, after President Wexler

Dates: 1979 - 1980

A “native son” – both his BA and MA were earned at Hunter College – Dr. Shenker began his professional career as a key aide to Chancellor Albert Bowker at the City University.  He later served as acting president of Kingsborough Community College and, in 1977, as chief negotiator for the University in collective bargaining with the Professional Staff Congress.  In 1970, at the age of thirty, he became the founding resident of LaGuardia Community College, which is recognized as one of the most innovative institutions in America in the field of co-operative education.  While acting president of Hunter (on leave from LaGuardia), a $100 million bond issue was sold and the long-delayed construction of Hunter’s twin towers began.
