HISTORICAL NOTE
Hunter College bestowed its first M.S. degree in Dance Therapy in 1971. The program was developed by Claire Schmais (Class of 1949) instructor of volleyball and modern dance at Bronx State Hospital; Elissa White who was the first dance therapist at the aforementioned institution; and Martha Davis a psychologist who specialized in the science of movement. The curriculum was developed from a grant from the National Institutes of Mental Health and focused on dance therapy and practice, movement observation (using the Rudolph Laban system), and dance as a non-verbal medium of communication. As students progressed through the program supervised internships were established with agencies/centers which cared for psychiatric patients, the mentally retarded, substance abusers, disturbed children, infants, and seniors. The original program lasted 1½ years and consisted of 30 credits. The student body was international in scope with individuals representing Switzerland, Germany, Japan, China, Norway, Columbia, India, Israel, as well as the United States of America. All students interned at Bronx State Hospital. In 1982, a dual degree program combining social work and dance therapy was started. This was a three-year 80 credit program granting both an M.S. in Dance/ Movement Therapy and an M.S.W. The Dance Therapy Program at Hunter College was abruptly suspended in 1995. Many of the program’s instructors and former students were dismayed to hear that Hunter College would no longer offer a degree in Dance Therapy.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Dance Therapy Program of Hunter College was operational from 1971 to 1995. It should be noted that this program was a prototype for the training of dance therapists in the United States. Over the years the program prepared clinicians for work in mental health facilities with people who were emotionally, mentally, and/or physically impaired. This collection contains incomplete records for the years 1971-1996. In addition, there is a small set of files from the Hunter Dance Therapy Alumni Association for the years 1976 - 1979. The records are arranged in two series: Administration and Hunter Dance Therapy Alumni Association. The folders are arranged alphabetically within each series.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies of Hunter College has its roots in the turbulent decade of the 1960's. During this period the United States was in the midst of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, inner city unrest, demands for minority and women’s rights, and the unprecendented demands of African-Americans, Asian-Americans, and Latino college students for a more inclusive curriculum. Hunter College was not immune from the politically charged atmosphere of the 1960’s. The pressure to get Hunter College (and CUNY) to comply with its historic mission of providing higher education to the sons and daughters of New York’s working class was spearheaded by disadvantaged students from the African-American and Puerto Rican/Latino communities. The Toussaint L’Ouverture Society and La Sociedad Eugenio Maria de Hostos in 1969 denounced Hunter College’s curriculum for not including and reflecting the needs of African-American and Puerto Rican/Latino students. On February 17, 1969, the Toussaint L’Ouverture Society issued a list of nonnegotiable demands to the administation. The students requested the establishment of a “Black directed Black Studies Department open to all students.” They also insisted that the department should have their own counselors, library, and that the existing fieldwork courses (offered by the Sociology Department) be absorbed by the new department. (See Hunter Envoy of February 17, 1969, for a list of the demands). On February 21, 1969, the Hunter Envoy reported that La Sociedad de Eugenio Maria de Hostos demanded the establishment of a Puerto Rican Studies Department, open to all students, by Fall 1969. The Toussaint L’Ouverture Society supported Hostos’ demands in light of the fact that they too insisted on the creation of a separate Black Studies Department. Reaction to the requests made by the Toussaint L’Ouverture Society and La Sociedad Eugenio Maria de Hostos was mixed. Some administrators and faculty rejected the demands outright, while others genuinely supported the students. It should be noted that the student demands were not unique to Hunter College. Students at City College and Brooklyn College were also requesting the creation of Black and Puerto Rican Studies programs. Nationally, the demands for Black Studies programs led to disorders at San Francisco State, Brandeis, and Wisconsin University. In February 1969, Hunter College faculty voted to establish a Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies, and a student-faculty committee drew up preliminary curriculum and recommended appointments. The Faculty Council of Hunter College approved the curriculum of the department on June 18, 1969, and a week later, the Faculty Personnel and Budget Committee approved the appointment of Keith Baird, Miguel Barcelo, John Henrik Clarke, and Eduardo Seda-Bonilla. The Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies was scheduled to commence operation in September of 1969.

4

Arguments for and against the implementation of Black and Puerto Rican studies programs throughout CUNY ebbed back and forth. Finally, on July 9, 1969, the Board of Higher Education held a special meeting and adopted a Statement of Policy by the Board of Higher Education in which it “encouraged the development of programs of Black and Puerto Rican studies within the University, and to give the funding of these programs special priority.” The creation of the Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College fostered the revision of Hunter’s curriculum in the Humanities and Social Sciences and indirectly spearheaded the creation of Asian, Jewish, and Women’s Studies Programs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of the Department of Black & Puerto Rican Studies were donated to Archives & Special Collections by the former Chair Dr. Jose Manuel Santiago Torres. The records were originally housed in a file cabinet from whence they were removed and subsequently placed in archival boxes. The archivist imposed order on the records with the exception of the personnel files which were maintained in their original filing order. The impact that the Department of Black & Puerto Rican Studies had on Hunter College’s curriculum was significant because in subsequent years undergraduate students were required to take specific courses in BLPR to fulfill some of their distributiojn requirements. The initial courses offered on African history and culture, African-American Studies and Puerto Rican Studies enriched the College’s curriculum and provided for a better understanding of both minority groups.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Art Department was one of the original departments of the Normal College of the City of New York which opened on February 14, 1870. The annual reports that are included in this collection are invaluable for tracing the history of the aforementioned department. Music and drawing courses were offered to undergraduates since the inception of the College in 1870. The 1908 Report of the Department of Drawing indicated that there were 191 students enrolled in art history, composition and design, water color & cast drawing, oil painting, arts & crafts, and other related courses. Professor Christine W. Reid, Chair of Art Department, indicated in her 1913 report that the art history classes increased in number along with the number of teachers. By 1931, the number of students enrolled in the department rose to 1,614 – 78 students less than in the previous year. This was attributed to the lack of sufficient classroom space in the building. New courses were added to the discipline and a gallery-like space was created on the fifth floor to exhibit student drawings, paintings, and designs. Professor Joseph Cummings Chase, Chair of the Art Department, reported in 1941 of the excitement that was generated when the department moved to new quarters in “The Palace on Park Avenue.” A comprehensive history of the department is sorely needed since the records in this collection only go up to 1946 with a couple of items from 1967 and 1992. Researchers may want to examine the Edna Wells Luetz Papers to assess the work and contribution of one of the former chairs of the Art Department.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of the Academic Skills Department/SEEK Program at Hunter College document the establishment and growth of an educational program which sought to acclimated non-traditional students to the rigors and demands of college life. Initial enrollees of the SEEK Program were primarily working class African-American and Puerto Ricans from New York City high schools. Many of the SEEK students lacked appropriate reading/writing skills to undertake a rigorous undergraduate course of study. The SEEK Program at Hunter College sought to rectify these academic deficiencies by offering applicants remedial courses, counseling, and financial assistance. The primary goal of the program was to encourage and support non-traditional students to obtain baccalaureate degrees. The establishment of the Academic Skills Department/SEEK Program in September 1969, along with the Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies (renamed Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies), spearheaded change in the curriculum, faculty, and student body of Hunter College. The arrival of non-traditional students on campus during the late 1960’s and 1970’s compelled Hunter College to respond to a new constituency with distinct and specific educational needs.
