BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Marjorie Phillis Pearle was born in the Bronx, New York on February 2, 1934. She was one of two children born to Joseph Pearle (a certified public accountant and attorney) and Cecelia (Klein) Pearle, both of whom were Hungarian. Marjorie graduated from Hunter College High School on June 21, 1951, and subsequently received a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in English and Anthropology from Hunter College on June 16, 1955. Marjorie’s academic success (Magna Cum Laude) enabled her to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa shortly after graduation. Marjorie continued her interest in Anthropology at Columbia University where she attended from 1955 to 1956, but failed to graduate from said university. On January 5, 1957, Marjorie married Herbert M. Katz which resulted in the births of son Daniel Seth and daughter Nina Judith. The marriage lasted 16 years but dissolved in divorce in 1973. After 3 years as a divorcee Marjorie met and married Norman Weiser (a radio producer and public relations manager) on November 26, 1976. Marjorie and Norman remained as a couple until Marjorie passed away in 1996. After leaving Columbia University in 1956 Marjorie accepted a post as an editorial trainee with The Rockefeller Foundation, Office of Publications, in New York City. Marjorie’s next assignment was with Funk and Wagnalls where she worked as an associate editor in the trade book department from 1957 to 1960. Between 1960 and 1978 Marjorie became a free-lance writer, but she continued to work as a development editor through 1990 with Beard Glasser Wolf (independent packager producing books on food and cookery), Prentice-Hall (Book Project Division), Cambridge Book Company (Simon & Shuster Educational Division), Chelsea House, and Worth Publishers. Marjorie was attentive, meticulous, productive, and excelled in completing publisher related assignments. While diligently working as a development editor with the aforementioned companies, Marjorie somehow managed to author and co-author a total of 16 books. Some of her key publications include Pegs to Hang Ideas On (1972), Shaped by Hands (1975), Ethnic America (1978), Womanlist (1981), and Snapshots (1984) to name a few. In a March 22, 1981, New York Times Book Review of Womanlist Marjorie explains the task of being an editor and writer: For me, the challenge of being an editor and writer lies in the opportunity to explore a variety of subject areas, and to present information to specific audiences. The joy of working both with ideas and people can be found in few other occupations – and here it produces a useful lasting product. Marjorie’s work as a development editor and writer did not deter her from being actively involved with the Alumni Association of Hunter College (1982 - 1990?), the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association (1973 -1990?), and Temple Shaaray Tefilia in New York City (1974 - 1990?). Marjorie P.K. Weiser passed away in 1996 and left a legacy of an individual who loved her family and friends and who cherished life with passion.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Marjorie P.K. Weiser Papers primarily document her affiliation with the Hunter College High School (Class of 1951) and with Hunter College of the City of New York (Class of 1955). It also highlights her active and simultaneous participation with the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association and with the Alumni Association of Hunter College. The files that pertain to Weiser’s years at Hunter College High School and her subsequent participation with the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association include, among other things, notebooks on Biology and Hygiene (1948 -1951), committee minutes (1986 - 1992), reminiscences by select alums of their years at the high school, and publications that Weiser either wrote for or actually spearheaded; these would include Alumnotes (1979 -1996), An AlumNotes Extra (1987 - 1988), AlumNotes Reunion Extra (1990 - 1994), Hunter Hi-Lites (n.d.), That’s What’s Special (1990 - 1991), and What’s What (1951, 1980, 1987, 1990, 1992). The files that relate to Weiser’s undergraduate years at Hunter College include awards, report cards, research papers, and copies of specific Hunter College publications. Documents that are associated with the Alumni Association of Hunter College consist of correspondence, financial reports, minutes, etc. The Marjorie P.K. Weiser Papers provide researchers with an opportunity to comprehend the intricacies of student life by sifting through unique documents that were left by an extraordinary individual who attended and graduated from Hunter College High School and Hunter College during the first half of the 20th Century.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Margaret Grant Plumb was born in New York City on June 23, 1893. She was a descendant of President Ulysses S. Grant and the niece of Clement Clarke Moore, the author of A Visit From St. Nicholas. Margaret enrolled in Hunter College High School in 1908 and graduated in 1912. In January 1916, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Hunter College with a minor in Political Science. In October 1919, Plumb received a Master of Arts degree in English literature from New York University and the title of her master's thesis was “The Chorus in Elizabethan Drama.” In 1925, Plumb received a certificate from the American Academy in Rome, Italy School of Classical Studies. In 1935, Plumb received a Bachelor of Science in Library Science from the School of Library Service at Columbia University. It should be noted that throughout her life Plumb developed the ability to read Greek, Latin, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. In January of 1916, Margaret Grant Plumb was placed in charge of the Library of Hygiene at Hunter College. On February 1, 1916, she was hired as a Temporary Library Assistant and remained in this post until May 31, 1916. Her next post was as Library Assistant from June 1, 1916 to May 15, 1919. In February 1919, Plumb was placed in charge of the general library, together with the books from the Library of Hygiene that had been transferred to the Hunter College Library. Plumb rose in rank to Assistant Librarian on May 15, 1919, and in 1945, she was promoted to Associate Librarian and served in that capacity until she retired from Hunter College in 1960. Margaret Grant Plumb made significant contributions to the growth and development of library service at Hunter College. First, she assisted in the organization of the book collection that grew significantly throughout her 44 year tenure at Hunter College Library. Second, she assisted in the organization of the Rare Book and Reserve Book collections. Third, she assisted in gathering institutional materials of historical value that were later used in the establishment of the Archives Centre in 1966. Plumb was prudent and understood the importance of saving documents of historical value for future generations. Lastly, Plumb played a pivotal role in the planning of the new library that opened to the Hunter College community in the Fall of 1940. The 1940 college facility replaced the original college edifice that was destroyed by a fire on February 14, 1936. In addition to her responsibilities as college librarian and administrator, Plumb was also active in the American Classical League, the American Library Association, the Classical Association of the Atlantic States, the Classical Society of the American Academy in Rome, the French Institute, the International Association for Classical Anthropology, the Library Association of the City University of New York, New York Regional Catalog Group, and the Society for French Historical Studies. Upon retiring from Hunter College in May 1960, Margaret Grant Plumb became the archivist at 34 Gramercy Park that was one of the oldest cooperative apartment buildings in New York City. In 1981, Plumb was inducted into the Hunter College Hall of Fame for her impeccable work and for her outstanding service to Hunter College. Margaret Grant Plumb died on August 31, 1986 and left behind a legacy of an individual who was committed to the library profession and to serving her constituents.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Margaret Grant Plumb Collection is an amazing assortment of materials that document the establishment and evolution of library service at Hunter College from 1890 to 1960. The variety of documents, records, and reports that comprise this collection shed light on the way administrators, librarians, and support staff built and sustained a college library and how they facilitated the needs of their patrons throughout the years. Margaret Grant Plumb was a clever and perceptive academic librarian/administrator who understood the importance of saving essential library and institutional documents for future generations. The collection primarily documents the establishment and evolution of library service at the Normal/ Hunter College Library from 1890 to 1960. Key components of this collection consist of library annual reports (1900 - 1951), documents on the Bronx Campus Library (1928 - 1960) and the Park Avenue Library (1890 - 1950), papers pertaining to Margaret Grant Plumb (1911 - 1975), black and white photographs of the original Normal/Hunter College edifice (1873 - 1936) and the Park Avenue building (1940 - 1982), rare books (1932 - 1958), and materials pertaining to Dr. Margaret Barclay Wilson (Class of 1884), Honorary Librarian from 1915 to 1927. The Margaret Grant Plumb Collection should attract the interest of academic librarians, students of Library Science, and researchers who are interested in learning about the establishment and evolution of library service at Hunter College from the late 19th Century to the sixth decade of the 20th Century.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
The Margaret Grant Plumb Collection came to Archives & Special Collections of the Hunter College Libraries in a pre-sorted alphabetical arrangement. However, upon careful inspection Professor Julio Hernandez-Delgado discovered that the arrangement of the collection was somewhat disordered. Many documents were incorrectly filed and several folders were mislabeled and didn't abide by the alphabetical arrangement. Instead of rearranging the entire collection, Professor Hernandez-Delgado decided to maintain the original alphabetical arrangement with some revisions. First, documents that were incorrectly filed were inserted into folders that contained similar materials. Second, folders that were mislabeled were renamed with appropriate headings. Third, files that contained related materials were grouped together in the alphabetical arrangement. For example, folders containing materials on the former Bronx Campus Library were grouped together under this heading. Professor Hernandez-Delgado felt that the grouping of related materials would aid potential researchers. Fourth, folders that were filled with too many documents were rearranged into separate folders. Lastly, fragile documents were duplicated with the original documents placed in archival plastic inserts. Key records in this collection that should pique the interest of researchers and scholars include annual reports (1900 - 1951), the Bronx Campus Library (1928 - 1960), Head Librarians Dr. Joseph J. Reilly, Dr. Frederick W. Stewart, Dr. Ben C. Bowman, and Dr. David Lane, Hunter College Library at Park Avenue (1890 - 1954), Papers pertaining to Margaret Grant Plumb (1923 - 1975), Rare Books (1931 - 1958), and, last but not least, materials pertaining to Dr. Margaret Barclay Wilson, Class of 1884. Dr. Wilson was chairman of the library committee during 1906 - 1917 and from 1915 to 1927 was honorary librarian of the Hunter College Library.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Tea & Talk Series was conceived by Doris de Montreville, (former head of the Education Library from 1962 - 1972) and by Florence B. Freedman, (former chair of the Library Committee of the Division of Programs in Education) in the early 1960's. The Tea & Talk Series Committee, chaired by Professor Eileen G. Cowe (1967 - 1983) consisted of members from the Education Library and the Division of Programs in Education. The series was sponsored by the Hunter College Library, the Division of Programs in Education, and the Graduate Student Association of Hunter College. The Tea & Talk Series (originally conceived as Conversation with Authors and Artists) “was designed to give students, faculty, and friends of Hunter College the opportunity to meet with outstanding authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults, and to hear from them about their inspiration and craft.” The program also encouraged dialogue between the authors and/or illustrators, and the audience. Decisions about whom to invite was made by the committee and was based on the quality and popularity of each writer or illustrator. The programs were open to the public and were held each semester in the Teachers Central Laboratory of the former Education Library. The first speaker of the series was Ezra Jack Keats (November 3, 1965), whose book The Snowy Day won the Caldecott Medal in 1963 for the most distinguished picture book for children. Initially no prepared talks were given. Guests were simply interviewed by Florence B. Freeman and willingly entertained questions from the audience. However, as the program evolved, subsequent guests did deliver prepared talks. Many of the presentations and interviews were recorded on audio cassette or reel-to-reel tapes and were later transcribed. Some of the outstanding authors and illustrators that appeared in the series included Isaac Asimov, Pura Belpre, John Ciardi, Don Freeman, Lillian Hoban, Leland Jacobs, Ezra Jack Keats, John Langstaff, Arnold Lobel, John Steptoe, and Maurice Sendak among others. Virginia Hamilton was the last Honor Guest to appear in the series in 1987. By the end of the 1980's it became increasingly tedious, time-consuming, and expensive to continue the program. In total 36 authors and illustrators of children and young adult books presented talks or were interviewed as part of the series. The members of the Tea & Talk Series Committee included Eileen G. Cowe, Florence B. Freeman, Herbert Halpern, Donna Hill, Elaine Karath, David Lane, Carrie Mannas, Bernice Samalonis, Mary Field Schwarz, Earl R. Shaffer, Ruth Smallberg, Andre Thiobodeau, Ann Travers, Karen Turner, Esther J. Walls, and James T. West. Additional individuals who provided assistance and support included Rita Rosenfeld, Sylvia Orman, Afton Miles, Frank Gielle, and Ray Nutkiss.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Tea & Talk Series Collection is an important resource for researchers interested in acquainting themselves with some of the outstanding authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults. The collection spans the years 1965-1987 and includes biographical information, correspondence, publicity materials, photographs, and transcripts for many of the invited speakers. The audio recordings and the transcripts of specific talks can provide informative and valuable insights into the world of writers and illustrators. Regrettably, not every talk and/or interview was recorded and transcribed. For example, there are no audio tapes or transcripts for Ruth Baylor, James Cass, Joy Garland, Maurice Sendak, Vera Southgate, and Kenneth Wollitz. Another golden nugget of the collection are the portraits and candid shots that were taken of most of the participants. These black & white photographs capture the presence and persona of each of the presenters. The last important section of the collection is an unpublished manuscript edited by Donna Hill and Florence B. Freeman titled: Creating Books For Children: Talks by Authors and Illustrators in the Tea & Talk Series. Donna Hill conceived of the idea of publishing some of the talks as a benefit for the series. The intent was to compile the transcripts of 18 participants and produce a book about the program. However, due to the climate of the times, the manuscript was never published. Included in the finding aid is a bibliography of books written by some of the authors and illustrators who participated in the program. Some of theses books constitute a large portion of the Muriel Fuller Book Collection that was officially donated to Hunter College Libraries on November 17, 1976.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Archives & Special Collections Collection documents the establishment and evolution of an archival repository at Hunter College. Early records shed light on specific events and on key individuals who understood the need to acquire and preserve College documents of historical significance. What is not documented in the records are the obstacles that early “curators” faced while attempting to preserve the historical memory of Hunter College. The majority of them functioned with inadequate space, inappropriate budgets, insufficient supplies, and with little or no support staff. However, despite these limitations Archives & Special Collections of the Hunter College Libraries has managed to persevere as the “gatekeeper” of Hunter’s past and has continued to facilitate research queries since 1966.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The history of the Hunter College Libraries Department has yet to be written even though there is ample material in this collection to undertake such an endeavor. Suffice to say that it was through the combined efforts of the Alpha Beta Gamma Society, the Philomathean Society, and the Alumnae Association of the Normal College of the City of New York that a college-level library was established in 1872. The library came to occupy several rooms on the first floor of the original Normal/Hunter College edifice on Park Avenue from 1873 - 1936. On February 14, 1936, fire erupted in the basement of the school and destroyed a significant section of the facility. Between 1936 and 1939, the library was housed in temporary quarters. By 1940, Hunter College was rebuilt on the original site and the library came to occupy the 10th and 11th floors of the “Palace on Park Avenue” for the next 44 years. In 1983, Hunter College inaugurated the opening of the East and West towers and Hunter College Library came to occupy two basements and the first seven floors of the East Building.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The original Hunter College Libraries Department Collection was organized in two sections. The first segment consisted of files that were arranged alphabetically by subject or topic. The next segment consisted of files that were created prior to 1970. Searching through both of these sections to facilitate patron requests proved to be awkward, cumbersome, and increasingly problematic. After consulting with Dr. Louise S. Sherby, Professor Julio Hernandez-Delgado decided to critically examine the entire Hunter College Libraries Collection and reorganize it under eleven new series and one subseries. Professor Hernandez-Delgado hopes the new arrangement will facilitate and enhance public access to a collection that documents library service at Hunter College from 1878 to 2011. The Hunter College Libraries Department Collection is arranged in thirteen series and one subseries. The collection consists of annual reports, by-laws, budgets, brochures, minutes, committee and task force reports, division reports, correspondence, memoranda, blueprints, memorial services, programs, publications, photographs, studies, proposals, surveys, scrapbooks, and statistical compilations. Academics may be attracted to the annual reports which document library service at both the Park Avenue facility and the former Bronx Campus (now Lehman College, CUNY) from 1900 to 2009. Researchers may also want to examine the files on the Teachers Central Laboratory, the Council of Librarians/Council of Chief Librarians, and the Faculty Council of Hunter College to better understand the impact of library service on the various constituents of Hunter College. Researchers seeking to acquire additional information about library service at Hunter College are encouraged to examine the Archives of the Alumni Association of Hunter College, 1872 - 2008, and the Margaret Grant Plumb Collection, 1890 - 1960. The Alumni Association was instrumental in helping to establish a college library and select documents in their archives documents this endeavor. Margaret Grant Plumb worked as a librarian at Hunter College for over 40 years and miraculously managed to gather and preserve an extraordinary array of records and reports that document the growth and development of library service at Hunter College.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of the Department of English document the evolution of one of the original academic departments of the Normal/Hunter College. The annual reports summarize departmental accomplishments, setbacks, deficiencies, concerns, and future projections. Departmental correspondence and minutes allow for a different perspective on its development. Of possible interest to scholars of undergraduate and/or graduate student clubs are the folders on The English Club (1944 - 1962), The Literary Society (1954 - 1961), and the Shakespeare Society (1931 - 1936). Lastly, researchers seeking information on what was published by former faculty members of the English Department may want to examine Series II – Faculty Publications.

4

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of the Department of Education date back to 1908 and document the evolution of one of the original departments of the Normal College (1870-1913) which was subsequently renamed Hunter College in 1914. The annual reports provide interesting accounts of the mission and growth of the department, courses offered, and the implementation of evolving teaching methodologies that were adopted throughout the years. The Department of Education offered their students various teacher training opportunities through study and internships. One such internship program which is thoroughly documented in this collection is Project 120. This program, which was co-sponsored by the New York City Board of Education, involved the placement of Hunter College students in selected junior high schools that served students in economically depressed areas. Project 120 enrollees would gain invaluable teaching experience while providing valuable service to local communities. Departmental publications like Education Special, Teacher Education News & Notes, T.E.P. Topics, Center, Collective Voices, Dateline, Dates & Data, and Viewpoint can be used by researchers in education to assess the ideas, issues, concerns, and research interests of the Department of Education during the 20th Century. Related to the aforementioned publications are the variety and scope of reports and studies that also constitute this collection. Educational researchers should find works on curriculum trends, teacher training, use of technology in the classroom, and teacher certification requirements useful and timely for the period. The Normal/Hunter College was initially established to prepare women to become teachers in the public schools of New York City. Researchers in the field of education should find the records of the aforementioned department informative and revealing as it sought to prepare a cadre of public school teachers during the 20th Century.
