Hernández-Delgado Ms. Sofía Zambrano Ms. Dane Guerrero April, 1997 December, 2012 3 �HISTORICAL NOTE The Art Department was one of the original departments of the Normal College of the City of New York which opened on February 14, 1870. The annual reports that are included in this collection are invaluable for tracing the history of the aforementioned department. Music and drawing courses were offered to undergraduates since the inception of the College in 1870. The 1908 Report of the Department of Drawing indicated that there were 191 students enrolled in art history, composition and design, water color & cast drawing, oil painting, arts & crafts, and other related courses. Professor Christine W. Reid, Chair of Art Department, indicated in her 1913 report that the art history classes increased in number along with the number of teachers. By 1931, the number of students enrolled in the department rose to 1,614 – 78 students less than in the previous year. This was attributed to the lack of sufficient classroom space in the building. New courses were added to the discipline and a gallery-like space was created on the fifth floor to exhibit student drawings, paintings, and designs. Professor Joseph Cummings Chase, Chair of the Art Department, reported in 1941 of the excitement that was generated when the department moved to new quarters in “The Palace on Park Avenue.” A comprehensive history of the department is sorely needed since the records in this collection only go up to 1946 with a couple of items from 1967 and 1992. Hernández-Delgado Mr. Joseph Pagan Ms. Dane Guerrero April 1997 November 2014 Date: Revised: 2 �SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The records of the Academic Skills Department/SEEK Program at Hunter College document the establishment and growth of an educational program which sought to acclimated non-traditional students to the rigors and demands of college life. Initial enrollees of the SEEK Program were primarily working class African-American and Puerto Ricans from New York City high schools. Many of the SEEK students lacked appropriate reading/writing skills to undertake a rigorous undergraduate course of study. The SEEK Program at Hunter College sought to rectify these academic deficiencies by offering applicants remedial courses, counseling, and financial assistance. The primary goal of the program was to encourage and support non-traditional students to obtain baccalaureate degrees. The establishment of the Academic Skills Department/SEEK Program in September 1969, along with the Department of Black and Puerto Rican Studies (renamed Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino Studies), spearheaded change in the curriculum, faculty, and student body of Hunter College. The arrival of non-traditional students on campus during the late 1960’s and 1970’s compelled Hunter College to respond to a new constituency with distinct and specific educational needs. 3 �SERIES DESCRIPTION Series I – Administration Series I documents academic and fiscal plans, activities and events, budgets, by-laws, correspondence, memoranda, and newspaper articles and clippings. The folders are arranged alphabetically. Series II – Publications Series II consists of publications that from the central office of the SEEK Program of C.U.N.Y. and from the SEEK Program at Hunter College.
