search NY newspapers

Open http://library.hunter.cuny.edu/ in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

In this tutorial, we'll learn how to create a set of New York-based newspapers to use for a search in the Lexis-Nexis database.

Beginning at the library homepage, select the "Databases" button at the middle of the page.

Then, select L for Lexis-Nexis.

On the L page, select Lexis-Nexis.

Use the arrow at the bottom of this page to get to the next page of instructions.

At the top of the page, next  to Source Directory, select Browse

Browse link

On this page, we're going to set up our "filter," to find all New York-based newspapers.

Next to Filter by, first go to the pull-down menu for Country and select United States.  Once you've done that, you'll get a secondary pull-down menu for Region.  Select New York.

Next, under Topics, select General News Sources.

Where it says Select a category to view sources, click on News

News link

Next, you'll see a few folders with various options.  Select Newspapers.

From here, you can pick the regional newspapers that are of interest.

If you're interested in New York City, we recommend:

  • Daily News (New York)
  • New York Observer
  • The New York Post
  • New York Sun  (may not be current)
  • The New York Times

Some of the boxes can be difficult to click.  Be patient.

Once all of the relevant boxes are clicked, click the red OK box.

Red OK button

* Do not select the Most Recent 2 Weeks option (unless you only want the most recent two weeks).

We did not select:

  • Buffalo News (upstate -- out of Buffalo)
  • Newsday (from Long Island)
  • The Record (Bergen County, NJ)

From here, you can begin your search, using relevant keywords.

Depending on your research needs, you can apply this process in order to select other specific regions, or other types of news sources.
