Picturing Thanksgiving

November 24th, 2008 by Sarah Laleman Ward

To continue my Thanksgiving theme from a previous post, I now bring you images related to Thanksgiving, courtesy of ARTstor!  ARTstor is a fantastic resource for images of all kinds – fine art, painting, sculpture, photographs, architectural models, and much much more.  You can find ARTstor by clicking on the “Databases” link from the Hunter College Libraries home page and looking under the letter “A.”

I just did a search for “Thanksgiving” to see what came up.  134 images turned up that include the word “Thanksgiving” somewhere in the description.  Not too shabby.  Below, you will find some of my favorites:

Edward Penfield, 1866-1925, Farmer holding sheaves with two yoked oxen, Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division

Thomas Frederick Arndt, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York, 1980, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts

Thanksgiving Day card from soldiers at the Mexican border during the Mexican Revolution, 1916, The Image Gallery, University of California, San Diego

Jack Delano, Thanksgiving day, Ledyard, Connecticut, 1940, The Image Gallery, University of California, San Diego

George Elbert Burr, Thanksgiving Menu, 1905, Smithsonian American Art Museum

Robert J. Keller, Boy and girls dressed as Pilgrims, posed with trays of food, n.d. (circa 1940-1945), The Schlesinger History of Women in America Collection

What kinds of Thanksgiving-related treasures can you dig up at the library?  I bet there are tons more than I came up with.  Let us know what you find, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
