January 5th, 2011 by Wendy Tan

This is the newest comer of library database collection. Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), established in 1962, is a unit within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. However, this unit is actually an international consortium of about 700 academic institutions and research organizations. According to its mission statement, it provides leadership and training in data access, and methods of analysis for social science research community.

ICPSR has more than 500,000 digital files, across 16 disciplines, which include aging, criminal justice, demographic data, education, general health and mental health, international affairs, instructional data, race and ethnicity, terrorism, etc. What you will get from this database is raw numerical data for further analysis, so reports, charts, or lengthy articles are rarely found.

Now it is a CUNY-wide resource. ICPSR could be accessed through library homepage under database grid. Meanwhile, over 7000 related catalog records have been loaded to CUNY+. To retrieve records of this category, you may key in subjects, along with keyword “ICPSR”. There are a detailed summary, and specific subject links in each record.
