For-credit course now offered by Library
July 30th, 2008 by Clay Williams
Beginning in the Winter Session of 2007 Hunter College Libraries are teaching a for-credit course. The fall semester of 2008 will witness the fourth consecutive semester (discounting summer) that the course is offered. As in the spring there will be two sections offered this coming semester.
Librarians have been teaching information literacy for decades, and Hunter now joins many other colleges and universities which are teaching such courses. These schools include the University of Rhode Island, the University of Arizona, and SUNY Albany.
The one-credit course teaches the students not only to negotiate the libraries’ resources and evaluate websites, but also emphasizes academic integrity and information ethics. The concomitant critical thinking skills will be the major focus of the entire semester.
Upon such a foundation the students will be able to construct lifelong learning skills that will enhance and enrich their academic and professional lives as the world becomes richer in information and the need to delineate good information from bad becomes more pronounced.
