Breaking records

December 14th, 2009 by Sarah Laleman Ward

It has been a record-breaking year here at the Hunter College Libraries. On December 9, the Main Library’s gate count (the number of people entering the library) broke 800,000 for the year. And, the year isn’t over yet! Also, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of last week, over 6000 people came in to the library each day. The total count from last week alone exceeded 30,000 people!

Now that finals have arrived, imagine how many more people will be crossing our threshold before the year is out. And what about the numbers of people who come to the Social Work Library, the Health Professions Library, and the Zabar Art Library?

So, you may ask, what’s the big deal? Well, it’s a pretty big deal to us here at the library that our numbers have increased 5% from last year and 8% from the year before. It lets us know that, regardless of the reason you come in to the library, the library as a space still fulfills a critical role on the Hunter campus. It’s something that we know, anecdotally, but having the numbers to back it up is even better.

Good luck on your finals! And let us know if we can help – that’s what we’re here for!
