New Books at Health Professions Library

Hunter College Health Professions Library recently have added several hundred new books to its collection. Here is a sampling of several new titles in the following areas: nutrition/food science, medical lab sciences and environmental/occupational health. Some highlights:

In Defense of Food: An Eater's ManifestoIn Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto/ Pollan, Michael. The Penguin Press 2008. RA 784 .P643 2008. In Pollan’s latest book, he proposes that we “eat food, not too much, and mostly plants.” Pollan urges us to focus on eating “real” foods, as opposed to processed and refined foods, and challenges the nutrient approach to foods, or nutritionism. Our health cannot be divorced from the health of food chains of which we are part of.

Culturing Life: How Cells Became TechnologiesCulturing Life: How Cells Became Technologies/ Landecker, Hannah. Harvard College 2007. QH 585.2 .L36 2007. This book offers a history of the development of cell culture in biology, and documenting and exploring the technique behind artificial form of cellular life.

Smelling Land: The Hydrogen Defense Against Climate Catastrophe/ Scott, David Sanborn. Canadian Hydrogen Assn. 2007. TP 359 .H8 S28 2007. Smelling Land gives a comprehensive examination of:
