Mission of the Hunter College Libraries

The Hunter library serves the faculty and students by supporting the educational goals of the college as stated in the College’s Mission Statement.

The primary goal of the library is to provide students with broad access to a variety of learning materials, and to provide the faculty with comprehensive and timely access to research materials. As financial circumstances permit, the library strives to open up for the student new avenues for independent study, and to increase and strengthen the resources in the research areas in which the Hunter faculty is engaged. The library also extends its services, where possible, to alumni and the neighboring community.

The library, while maintaining and increasing the traditional strengths of the Hunter collection, enriches it with systematic acquisitions of multicultural materials reflecting the multi-ethnic composition of the college.

Aware of the new developments in information technology which affect the educational process, the library aims to provide easy access to world-wide information and research resources through computer work stations and electronic communication links.

To promote the most effective use of available resources, the library conducts a broad instructional program for all its users through classroom teaching support, workshops and individualized assistance as well as through a systematic publication program, exhibits and displays.

To ensure the highest quality of service, the library encourages constant upgrading of substantive knowledge and management skills of its faculty and systematic training of its support staff.

United in a common goal, the library maintains close cooperation with its partners in the educational enterprises of the college–the faculty, students, and administration.

Goals of the Hunter College Libraries Blog

The goal of the Hunter College Libraries Blog is to provide all of the Hunter College Library patrons timely and useful information about Hunter College Libraries services, resources, and its community outreach events and projects.  It aims at increasing patrons’ interest n the Hunter College Libraries web sites and patrons’ interaction with librarians and staff.

Policies, Guidelines, and Procedures for the Hunter College Libraries Blog

1.  Blog Managers

The Hunter College Libraries Blog will be managed by the Web Librarian, assisted by the Head of Systems.  Submissions will be reviewed and approved by the Blog Manager prior to posting.

Significant decisions will be made by the Hunter College Libraries Web Committee and then submitted to the Chief Librarian for approval.

2.  Bloggers

Bloggers must be affiliated with the Hunter College Libraries, or invited guests, such as members of the Hunter College community.

3.  Content

Blog Managers deem quality contents essential to the success of Hunter College Libraries Blog, which will use graphics and other multimedia judiciously.  The Blog Manager reserves the right to reject submissions that do not conform with Hunter College Libraries mission statement or that do not conform with the Blog policies and guidelines presented in this document.

4.  Acceptable Use

Bloggers are required to check facts, present balanced views, acknowledge and correct errors, and check spelling and grammar before actual posting.  While quotes from related web sites and blogs are encouraged, bloggers are expected to cite their sources properly.

In addition, bloggers are encouraged to accept the following as common sense:

1)    Make it clear that the views expressed in the blog are yours and yours alone and do not necessarily represent the views of your employer.

2)    Respect the institution’s confidentiality and propriety information.

3)    Ask your supervisor if you have any questions about what is appropriate to include in your blog posting.

4)    Be respectful to the institution, employees, customers, partners and competitors.

5)    Understand when the institution asks that topics not be discussed for confidentiality or legal compliance reasons.

6)    Ensure that your blogging activity does not interfere with your work commitments.

5.  Feedback Comment System

Comments are open to patrons and should be relevant to the specific blog post.  Blog Managers will monitor patron comments.  Spam, flaming, personal attacks and off-topic comments are not permitted.  Blog Managers reserve the right to edit and delete comments of this nature.  Efforts will be made to prevent individuals repeatedly violating these requirements.

6.  Blog Categories

Blog Managers and the Web Committee will create Blog categories.  Members of the Hunter College community may submit suggestions for categories to the Blog Managers and the Web Committee.

7.  Blogroll and Links

The Hunter College Libraries Blog will link to the web pages of key Hunter College Libraries services and resources.  Other links to web sites and/or blogs may be included in the Hunter College Libraries Blog if they help achieve its goals, as are described in this document.

8.  Copyright

Hunter College Libraries reserves the copyright of the content on the Blog.

9.  Branding and Marketing

Hunter College Libraries Blog must have Hunter College Libraries masthead and contact information.  A link to the Blog must be prominently placed on the Hunter College Libraries home page and relevant pages for access and marketing purposes.
