Access Policy for Archives and Special Collections:

The Archives & Special Collections at Hunter College Libraries adhere to the ALA-SAA Joint Statement on Access: Guidelines for Access to Original and Research Materials, which was approved in August 1994 in accordance with statutory authority, institutional mandate, the Code of Ethics for Archivists, the Standards for Ethical Conduct for Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Librarians.

Our repository is open to all administrators, faculty, and students of CUNY and outside researchers who have secured permission by the Head of Archives & Special Collections prior to their visit.

To request items from the Archives or Special Collections prior to your visit, you may fill out and submit Request Form.

Materials Policy:

Archival materials and Special Collections items must be examined in the reading room. Researchers who wish to examine our collections must adhere to the following rules:

1. Researchers must provide appropriate identification upon entering the repository.
2. Researchers must deposit all briefcases, purses, coats, bags, umbrellas and other personal items with the Head of Archives & Special Collections.
3. Researchers must request materials by filling out the request form.
   Researchers must consult all materials in the reading room and they may not be removed from the premise.
4. Researchers are responsible for the safeguarding of materials provided to them.
5. Researchers may not deface, lean on, or fold any document they request to examine. The use of pens, flairs, and/or magic markers is PROHIBITED. Laptop computers and audio recording devices with headsets can be used but only with the permission of the Head of Archives & Special Collections. The use of digital recording devices is PROHIBITED.
6. Researchers must maintain the arrangement of archival materials they request to examine and return said materials intact to the Head of Archives & Special Collections.
7. Researchers are PROHIBITED from eating, drinking, smoking, and disturbing other patrons in the reading room.
   

Copyright Statement:

The Archives & Special Collections of the Hunter College Libraries provides access to its collections in order to support education and scholarship. Some archival materials and Special Collections items may be protected by the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.).  Additionally, the use and reproduction of some materials may be restricted by terms listed in the deed of gifts and donor restrictions.

Permission to examine and reproduce materials is not an authorization to publish them. Researchers who plan eventual publication of their work should make inquiry concerning overall restrictions on publication before beginning their research. The Archives & Special Collections of the Hunter College Libraries does not assume responsibility for infringement of copyright held by others. If permission to publish is granted, location of the material must be indicated in the work.

Document Reproduction Policy:

Request to duplicate archival materials and Special Collections items must be approved by the Head of Archives & Special Collections. Duplication of archival materials will be handled by the staff of the repository with the requestor bearing a nominal fee for each document that is reproduced.

Interlibrary Loan Policy:

We do not circulate archival material and/or Special Collection items. However, we do facilitate Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests for masters theses, written by Hunter College students which are available in microfiche format. Researchers must initiate ILL requests through their respective libraries.

Reading Room Regulations:

The reading room is open to the administrators, alumni, faculty, and students of The City University of New York, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Independent researchers are welcome and must schedule an appointment prior to visiting.
